ONLINE SESSION ONE: Selected-Response & Constructed Response Test

Introduction: In this session, you will be introduced to the 5 item-writing ‘commandments’ that will support your efforts to design and/or identify effective selected-response and constructed response test items. Guidelines to consider when using commercially produced and/or teacher created selected response test items will be presented and practiced. You will work with the four most common kinds of selected response items: binary-choice, multiple binary-choice, multiple-choice, and matching.
In addition, you will examine the nuances of identifying and designing effective short answer and essay test items.
Objectives:
The learner will understand assessment as a means of evaluating how students learn, what they know, and are able to do.
. 2.1 Apply item writing commandments/guidelines to create and/or evaluate effective selected-response test items.

    • Item-writing guidelines for Multiple-Choice test items
    • Item-writing guidelines for Matching test items
    • Item-writing guidelines for Short-Answer test items
    • Item-writing guidelines for Essay test items

DIRECTIONS:

Activity # 1 - Interactive PowerPoint and online discussion groups The suggested time-line here is to aim to complete the discussion/activities for the Selected Response items no later than Saturday of week # 1. To keep the discussion moving, PLEASE be sure to begin entering the 10 Selected Response discussions NO LATER THAN TUESDAY OF WEEK ONE . . . then aim to keep engaged with your group so that you can all share in the tasks involved. You will be asked to self-evaluate and complete peer evaluations related to the group work in these activities.

You will need to open and view a short PowerPoint segment entitled Selected Response Tests ; this PowerPoint presentation details the ‘5 Commandments for test item construction’ as well as item writing guidelines for binary-choice, multiple binary-choice, matching, and multiple-choice test items.

Throughout the PowerPoint ( at 6 different intervals) you will be directed to PAUSE and click on the "Discussion" tab located on your group page. The discussion prompts for each section will be a series of exemplars and non-exemplars of effective binary-choice, multiple binary-choice, matching, and multiple-choice test items.

You will participate in 5 of these throughout your viewing of the PowerPoint presentation on Selected Response Tests.

You will also need to post your group project for multiple binary-choice test items on your Group home page. To access your Group page click your group name (to the left of this page).
